Urgent call for blood donors to session in Coxheath

Blood donors are needed urgently after supplies started to run low.

Snow in some areas of the country has led to the cancellation of some blood donor sessions which has affected supplies.

Stocks of one particular blood group - O negative - have fallen below preferred levels and NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is appealing in particular to these donors to come forward to replenish stocks.

Group O negative is particularly important as this blood can be given safely to patients with other blood groups.

Donors are being asked to attend an additional session at Coxheath Village Hall, Stockett Lane, on Tuesday, December 28, 9.30am-1.30pm.

Jon Latham, assistant director of Blood Donation at NHSBT, said: "We would like to thank everyone who has given blood over the past few weeks, particularly when the weather was bad.

"We rely on the generosity and commitment of volunteer donors to help us maintain the vital supply of blood to hospitals.

"We especially need O negative donors at the moment as we have experienced higher than expected orders for this type of blood in the past week.

"With Christmas rapidly approaching and the holidays this year falling over a weekend, we would also like to remind anyone due to donate to step forward now, weather permitting.

"Maintaining healthy stocks of all blood groups is essential as people will still be in hospital and requiring treatment."

Giving blood is vital to ensure that patients undergoing surgery and receiving treatment for cancer and blood diseases, such as leukaemia, continue to receive the transfusions they need.

First time donors should be aged between 17-65, weighing at least 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health. If you've donated before, you can start again up to your 70 birthday and there is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.
