Coleman home with seconds to spare

Mike Coleman of Medway and Maidstone AC clinched the Kent 10 mile road race title to add to his growing collection of gold medals with an exciting finish at an icy Sidcup on Sunday.

The six-times Kent cross-country champion warmed the spectators at Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar School in Hurst Road with a sprint finish to defeat the host club’s James Connor by two seconds in 49minutes 57 seconds Third placed James Lawler of Bedford and County AC was third place was James Lawler (50.01) of Bedford and County AC.

Peter Tucker (50.51) of Blackheath and Bromley Harriers claimed the Kent bronze medal in fourth overall, ahead of James Sumpter (52.15) of Thames Valley Harriers and Julian Rendall (53.12) of Tonbridge AC.

The top 30 athletes in the field of 456 finishers broke the hour on a swift course thanks partly to the sterling efforts of the officials of Kent AC, who cleared the route of snow and ice to allow the event to go ahead.
