Yemi Odubade thought he was offside when he scored the goal that kept Maidstone up - but did what all good strikers do.

Odubade struck in the third minute of added time as United beat Boreham Wood 1-0 to secure their National League status.

He'd had a goal ruled out for offside from a Stuart Lewis pass minutes earlier and expected the flag to go up again.

But it stayed down, triggering wild scenes at the Gallagher.

Odubade said: "The second one, I thought I was more offside than the first one but I thought I'd put it in because that's what you do, you score first and then see what happens.

"I looked over and the lino didn't raise his flag. I couldn't believe it.

"The euphoria was unbelievable. I didn't know where to run but it was good.

"I've scored goals but not like the significance of that. In that situation, I don't think that's ever happened to me before. It's a new feeling for me.

"I think that was the quickest I'd run all game when I celebrated!"

Odubade joined United last September following his release by Eastleigh.

The 32-year-old was the first experienced head to join what was a young squad trying to find its way in the National League.

He had an instant impact, scoring twice on his first start at Torquay and a last-minute winner against Macclesfield.

United's form deserted them but they came good in spectacular fashion.

Odubade said: "I've played for quite a few clubs now, I'm a bit of a journeyman and, like I said at the time, this club's got great foundations to kick on and improve.

"It's the first time in the National League and it's about finding your feet.

"We went through a bad patch just before Christmas and just after but the gaffer made shrewd signings and it helped us massively.

"The run we've been on is championship form. It's been brilliant and they're all good lads as well, so that helps.

"The turnaround's been unbelievable. It's just momentum. You just need that first win and when you get it, you just remember what you did and you keep going."
