Stones 'unluckiest side in world' if relegated

Harrow Borough v Maidstone

Maidstone United joint-manager Lloyd Hume has insisted that whoever is relegated from the Ryman League Premier Division this season could consider themselves the unluckiest team on earth.

Though Leyton are already relegated, there is a real dog-fight involving the Stones, who are on 46 points, and a number of other clubs separated by just a few points.

And with 45 points having been good enough for safety for the past seven season, it looks a safe bet that at least one of the those clubs will suffer the drop despite eclipsing the supposed magic number.

"Certainly I’ll consider us the unluckiest side in the world if we go down," said Hume, who had looked on in pain as his side squandered numerous chances in a 4-1 defeat against Ashford Town on Saturday.

"We’re on 46 points now and I fully expect us to be around the 52 mark come the end of the season.

"If you consider that 45 points has been good enough for safety for seven straight seasons, it looks as though there is going to be one or two managers that will counting themselves desperately unlucky in a few weeks’ time."

Hume’s side have just three games to get themselves out of trouble, starting with a trip to mid-table Harrow Borough on Saturday.

Borough are the highest-placed opposition Maidstone will face in the closing weeks, with the final two games against lowly Heybridge Swifts and a potentially pivotal clash with fellow relegation strugglers Folkestone on the campaign’s final day.
