Maidstone United winger Bobby-Joe Taylor takes his chance after spell on the sidelines

Bobby-Joe Taylor was smiling again after his match-winning efforts for Maidstone.

Taylor, an unused substitute in the last three games, came off the bench to lead United to a 2-1 victory at Gateshead.

He made the most of his chance, earning the corner for the equaliser and scoring the winner three minutes later.

Taylor said: "It's been tough being out of the side but, as has been said in the dressing room, it's a squad game.

"It's a bit similar to last year when I came in the side late.

"The gaffer said I've been miserable over the last couple of weeks.

"I wouldn't say I've been miserable but it's not nice not playing.

"The last three games I haven't even come on but at the end of the day, days like this are what football is all about and that's why we all love the game.

"When we came in at the end everyone was saying, 'finally, a smile'.

"It is a good feeling to get another goal because I haven't played for a while.

"To be the winner as well is a good feeling personally but all credit to everyone because the squad's been different class over the last nine games."

Taylor was brought on in a switch from 4-3-3 to 4-4-2 with United trailing 1-0.

He got at the Heed defence straight away and got his rewards.

He said: "As a winger I like to be positive and bring a bit of flair, to try and create something.

"To be fair, I had a couple more chances to either get my shot off or show more quality and we could have won 3 or 4-1 but a win's a win.

"The winner was with my right foot, across goal, which we've been working on.

"Pretty much every training session we stay out for an extra 10-15 minutes, so I'm delighted with that. It pays off putting those extra yards in."

Two-hundred travelling fans made the 620-mile round trip and Taylor said: "The number of fans up here is incredible.

"They're different class. Even one of their players who I know said to me 'your support is great' and I said to him they do it everywhere.

"Barrow, Gateshead, all the miles they do is incredible and credit to them. They've stayed with us."
