Travellers set up camp on East Malling's South Ward Playing Fields

Travellers have set up camp at a popular community sport venue over the weekend.

A convoy of vans and caravans was spotted on the South Ward Playing Fields on Saturday.

The visitors have reportedly removed a number of fence posts to gain access to the fields, as well as knocking a number over with their vehicles.

Access to the fields is through the King and Queen pub car park, and through an adjacent public car park.

It is reported that 10 caravans are on the field in total, and that they are arranged in a square.

The area is widely used by local football teams for practice and matches, and nearby tennis courts are also available for public use.

One resident told the Kent Messenger that within a couple of hours the group was canvassing local households for work.

A flyer left by one of the travellers said: "We can help because we care for trees, fences erected or repaired."

The local Liberal Democrat branch has tweeted to say it will be dealing with the relevant authorities.

It is believed that this is the same group of travellers that were previously on the community centre fields in Allington from Thursday night until Saturday midday.

Kent Police were called to the incursion in East Malling at 12.28pm.

The borough council has also been made aware, and is in the process of dealing with the group.
