Armour to have talks with top promoter

CHATHAM boxer Johnny Armour is making moves in a bid to resurrect his career.

Armour has teamed up with trainer Terry Coulter and will meet Frank Warren, who has fighters such as Ricky Hatton, Danny Williams and Joe Calzaghe in his stable, to see if the promoter can get his career back on track.

Armour has been waiting on promoters Matchroom Sport, owned by Barry Hearn, since the turn of the year and his patience has finally run out.

He was scheduled to fight Nicky Booth in February but injuries forced both parties to pull out.

Since then Armour has been linked with a showdown against Huddersfield’s Dale Robinson, but as yet no date has been arranged.

Armour said: “I need to get back into the ring so hopefully Frank Warren will be able to do that.

“Matchroom haven’t been able to deliver and I need to get myself back to work, so I’ll be in the gym with Terry on Tuesday and Frank Warren at the end of the week.

“I don’t care if he just gets me a warm-up fight as long as I get back into the ring.

“It’s been really frustrating because I’ve been training almost every day for four months. I had a couple of weeks off recently because I peaked and that’s no good when you’ve nothing to work towards.

“I have to thank Sanjay Ravel from Veena Leisure for helping me financially. Without his help I would have had to get a job but at my age I need to concentrate on training. I don’t know what I would have done without Sanjay.”

The 35-year-old hasn’t fought since he lost his WBU bantamweight crown to Nathan Sting in July last year and is hoping for one last big pay day.

He added: “My weight is good and I’m very fit but I need to get back into the ring and let people know I'm still around.

“I’m hoping Frank Warren can get me a date for a fight. He’s got some big fighters in his stable and hopefully he can get me a title shot.”
