Axe-wielding bookie raider escapes empty handed

A man armed with an axe threatened staff at a bookmakers and demanded cash.

Police are appealing for witnesses following the attempted robbery at Betfred in Gillingham High Street on Monday night.

The man entered the shop at about 8.45pm and threatened a female employee with a small axe.

But he was disturbed by another woman working in the shop and he ran out without taking anything. No-one was hurt in the incident.

DI Geoff Payne said: "The man had his face covered with a scarf, but he is described as being a black man of about 6ft 1in.

"He was wearing a black hooded jacket with a hat underneath.

"I would like to hear from anyone who may have seen someone acting suspiciously around the Gillingham High Street area between 8pm and 9pm."
