Firefighters using breathing apparatus spent two hours tackling the fire in Petchart Close.

When crews from Strood, Thames-side and Medway arrived at about 10pm the loft was well alight and tiles were crashing through the ceiling.

The couple who live there and raised the alarm, were downstairs when the fire broke out.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue said: "The roof was destroyed in the blaze, however inside the property fire damage was contained to the first floor landing. The first floor also sustained light smoke and damage.

"No one was injured and the fire is believed to be accidental."
