A councillor has called for action to improve safety on the road where two women were killed in Station Road, Strood, yesterday (Sunday).

Cllr Stephen Hubbard (Lab), who represents Strood North, said there had been a number of accidents on Station Road - by the junction of Evelyn Close - even before yesterday's tragedy.

As crash experts still investigated the deaths of the pedestrians, Cllr Hubbard said: "Until Evelyn Close was built there was no pedestrian demand to cross Station Road at this point. The council, as the Highway Authority, needs to urgently review road safety in Station Road."

He believed traffic safety measures needed to be considered, including speed bumps, chicanes, road markings, 20mph speed limit and flashing speed signs.
