Firefighters used hydraulic cutting equipment to cut off the door so paramedic could treat the man. He was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital with a suspected head injury. His condition is understood to be non-life threatening.

The impact has caused a considerable amount of damage to the shop front, partially demolishing a wall and shattering the windows.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service, said: "There is quite a bit of damage to the front of the shop.

"We evacuated the property upstairs until we could be sure the building was safe.

"I think the vehicle came down Canterbury Street and lost control, it must have hit the shop with quite some force.

"We cut the door of the car so we could free the man and then and made sure the scene was safe and were on the scene for about 45 minutes.

"As we left the police were making arrangements to get the building boarded up."
