A police spokesman says one of the incidents involved an overturned car.

"This is on the London-bound carriageway and near the junction for Bluebell Hill," he said.

"At least two collisions have been reported in the area since 4.50pm and police and ambulance crews are attending.

"A man who was in a car which overturned is not believed to have suffered any injuries."

Traffic was said to be slow between Junction 3 for Chatham and Rochester and Junction 1 for the A2 and Strood.

Officials from Kent County Council's highways team were warning motorists of queues along the stretch.

"There are reports of a collision between Junction 3 for Maidstone and Junction 2 for Strood," an authority spokesman said.

"Expect delays in the area."

It is understood traffic started to move freely along the motorway by about 6.30pm.
