Diners were evacuated this afternoon when a blaze broke out in the kitchen of a Gillingham pub.

Alarms went off at the Honorable Pilot, in Will Adams Way, just before 1.30pm.

About 12 firefighters arrived at the scene and had put out the fire within half an hour.

No-one is thought to have been hurt, but about 20 diners left stranded in the car park were offered refunds.

Gillingham resident Linda Doughty, 48, had come for lunch with her sons and grandchildren.

She said: "We had just ordered our food when the fire alarm went off and we were asked to go outside.

"We saw a bit of smoke wafting out of the roof and before we knew it there were three fire engines."
