Two women killed as they crossed a road on Sunday lunchtime
were a mother and daughter, medwaymessenger.co.uk can reveal.

Their identities have not yet been released as police attempt to
inform relatives.

The mother, aged 84, was pronounced dead at the scene of the
tragedy in Station Road, Strood, at around 12 noon. Her daughter,
who was in here 60s, was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital by
Kent Air Ambulance but died later.

The 18-year-old driver of a Seat Ibiza was still being
questioned by police on Monday.

Both victims are believed to come from Strood.

The road was cordoned off at its junction with Bowes Road while
crash investigators examined the the scene.

People living in the street came out of their homes after they
heard the crash, saying they had heard a loud bang.

Initial reports suggested the driver had been arrested on
suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, but police have
now said no arrests were made.

Crash investigators dealing with the accident are appealing for
witnesses and would like to speak to anyone who saw the car before
the accident happened.

A spokesman for Kent Police, said: “Officers from the serious
collision investigation unit are appealing for any witnesses to the
collision itself, or anyone who may have seen the Seat in the area
prior to the collision, to contact them on 01622 798535 or on
Crimestoppers with any information.”
