Lollipop man Bill Thomas shows no signs of slowing down.

Bill, who was voted the best lollipop man in the South East in 2008, has just celebrated his 80th birthday.

He has shunned retirement to help little ones cross the road outside Hempstead Infants School in Gillingham, where he has worked for eight years.

His milestone comes just weeks after our story about 83-year-old George Gibbs' ultimately successful job hunt made national headlines.

Pupils and staff helped him mark Bill's birthday with a special assembly, when they presented him with an ‘80’ cake made of fudge.

Head teacher Kate Dadd said: "Every class made him a birthday card and the staff had a collection and bought him a flat cap and a tie because he wears a shirt and tie every day."

Bill’s catchphrase is "I have to look after them all, they’re my family."
