Mrs Godwin's funeral was held at The Garden of England Crematorium in Bobbing yesterday. About 80 guests gathered to say their goodbyes.

During the service Mr Godwin, chairman of the Rainham Poetry Society, read a touching poem dedicated to his wife of 53 years.

He described Mrs Godwin, pictured below, as an outstanding wife and mother.

Mr Godwin said: "Without her beside me I feel so lost."

The couple had three sons - David, who died aged 16, Mark, who lives in Vietnam, and Stuart, who lives in Yorkshire, and a grandchild called Charlie.

The Rev Judy Henning, of St Margaret's, Rainham, read a tribute on behalf of the whole family. It described Mrs Godwin as small in stature but large in heart and generosity.

It added: "Muriel was kind, loving, caring and would advise whenever needed."

The couple's David was born with muscular dystrophy which led Mrs Godwin to help set up The 3H Fund to provide holidays for the disabled. The charity is still helping people 40 years later.
