Young patients were given a surprise when players from Gillingham FC visited them in hospital.

Children at Medway Maritime Hospital spent time with the stars and had their photographs taken with them.

The visit by the footballers was a treat for the 30 youngsters, some of whom had to spend Christmas Day in hospital.

Among the players on the wards on Monday was Mark Bentley, who has visited the children’s ward a number of times.

He said: “A lot of the kids are into football and it gives them a little lift when we come round.

“It’s a real eye-opener for us and a bit of a reality check, but when you see a child smile that’s the best bit.

“I have kids myself and if the shoe was on the other foot I know it would be devastating. I’ll probably be going home and giving my kids a huge hug tonight first thing.”
