GILLINGHAM were foiled last week in an attempt to hijack Crystal Palace striker Steve Kabba's £250,000 move to Sheffield United.

Lambeth-born Kabba hs now confirmed that he was aware of Gillingham’s interest just before he signed a three-year deal for United on Friday.

United opened negotiations with Palace for Kabba last week but the move was close to collapse after Palace insisted on a permanent deal after Blades manager Neil Warnock had wanted an initial loan until the end of December.

As the deal was placed on hold for 24 hours, Gillingham chairman Paul Scally moved in, only to be thwarted when United suddenly agreed to the Palace asking price.

The deal would have suited cash-strapped Gillingham. Under the terms agreed, United pay Palace £50,000 down with the rest spread over two years.

Kabba confirmed: “I knew of Gillingham’s interest on Thursday but I didn't have to make a decision because everything was eventually agreed between Sheffield United and Palace.”

Gillingham have long been keen on the 21-year-old ever since coach Wayne Jones reported back to player-manager Andy Hessenthaler with a glowing reference after he impressed playing for Palace Reserves against the club last season.

Gillingham’s interest in Kabba revived earlier this month when he produced an electrifying performance against them while on loan for Grimsby in the 1-1 draw at Blundell Park on November 2.
