Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway surprises Karen Tanner at Asda, Gillingham Pier, with best friend from Australia

It was just another evening at work for shop assistant Karen Tanner – until the camera crews and dancers turned up.

The 28-year-old, who works at Asda at Gillingham Pier, found herself starring on live Saturday night TV when she appeared on Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway.

She was stunned when a store announcement sparked a fanfare, a samba band, nautical backdrop and banners bearing her name. A troupe of dancers then treated her to a choreographed routine to the beats of the samba band.

Karen is marring Ryan Ager, 35, at Upnor Castle on Good Friday but the big day was going to be missing one very important person – Karen’s best friend Caley Goodearl.

The pair have been friends since they were two and naturally, Karen wanted her to be a bridesmaid, but Caley, 29, moved to Australia seven years ago.

With the cost of flights and a newborn baby, Caley wasn’t going to be able to make it to the big day – until Ant and Dec stepped in.

The ITV show flew Caley over from Australia and is also sending Ryan and Karen on a two-week cruise for their honeymoon.

Karen, who lives on St Mary’s Island, said: “I’m still in disbelief, I can’t believe it. I was just at work, I thought there was an advert being filmed.

“Things like this don’t happen to people like me. I was talking to Ant and Dec and didn’t even realise.

“One minute I was working and the next my best friend from Australia was there.”

They will also get to meet Ant and Dec as the presenters are set to film the season finale on the ship.

The surprise was planned by Karen’s sister, Lucy Taylor, who will be joining them on the cruise. The 32-year-old said: “The last few years have been really tough. I just wanted to do something nice for her really.

“It’s been so difficult keeping it a secret, she’s so nosey. When she thought there was an advert being filmed, we had to disconnect her car battery to stop her driving there to see who it was.”

Karen added: “The last few years, Lucy has done so much for me. She has been there through everything, she’s been like my rock, I think everyone deserves a sister like her.”

Store manager Chris Fawn said: “Karen always has a smile on her face and brings much warmth and spirit to our store. Seeing the expression on her face has been priceless.

“She’s an excellent and highly valued colleague and we wish her well with her forthcoming nuptials. And she can have the next six Saturdays off to enjoy her favourite show.”
