M2 closed at Junction 3 for Chatham and Rochester due to police incident

Part of the M2 was closed after police were called to reports of a distressed girl on the carriageway.

The motorway was initially shut coastbound at Junction 3 for Chatham and Rochester with traffic being diverted via the exit and entry slip roads.

A while later it was closed in both directions with one lane of the coastbound slip road also shut because of an abandoned car.

Traffic was temporarily held on both carriageways for around 50 minutes while the air ambulance landed.

The London bound stretch re-opened at around 5.10pm but coastbound traffic was unable to move for another 45 minutes.

The air ambulance has now left the scene.

A Kent Police spokesman said: "Kent Police was called at 16.01 on 14 February 2021 with concerns for the welfare of a distressed girl on the carriageway of the M2 at junction three coastbound.

"Officers attended and are assisting Highways Agency and SECAMB colleagues."

Both carriageways are now open and delays are clearing.
