Commuters are being urged to plan their journeys home as early as possible amid major disruption on the rail network.

Southeastern said some services from London to Kent are being cancelled and others delayed as snow begins to get heavier.

At one stage this afternoon, no Southeastern trains were running to Kent from London Victoria.

At about 2pm, the rail operator said: "The wintery weather is now disrupting our services - please consider planning your journey home now as you will need to allow additional time.

"A reduced service is operating from Victoria, please use Charing Cross, Cannon St, London Bridge and St Pancras as alternatives."

Some schools closed early today after the Met Office issued a severe weather warning.

Bradfields Special School in Chatham has been closed all day, while Greenacre, Walderslade and St John Fisher schools sent pupils home early this afternoon.

Meanwhile, the snow has led to a series of sporting fixtures being postponed.

Gillingham FC's game away to Rochdale tomorrow has been called off because of a frozen pitch.

Rochdale had their pitch under cover in the early part of the week, and an army of volunteers - including first team players - have been working hard to clear it over the last 24 hours, in preparation for the weekend.

But freezing temperatures and more snow have led the club to make an early decision to postpone the match.

And Lordswood FC's tie against County Durham club Spennymoor in the FA Vase - the biggest game in the club's history - is also not taking place.

Elsewhere, justice froze over at Maidstone Crown Court this afternoon with no cases being heard after lunch because of the snow.

Dozens of gritters have been out in force as a band of snow is expected to push across Kent from the west today.

The Met Office has issued a yellow ‘be aware’ weather warning for Medway.
