More snow misery for Medway

More schools have closed today as Medway continues to struggle in the snow.

Several more inches of the white stuff have fallen overnight and temperatures remain freezing.

While most of the main roads are clear, many of the side streets are still treacherous.

More than 80 schools and nurseries have closed as has the MidKent College campus in Gillingham.

For a full list of school closures, visit www.kmfm.co.uk.

Meanwhile, Medway Maritime Hospital said the "majority" of staff have made it into work and planned operations are going ahead.

Social care workers are carrying out home visits to older and vulnerable people using 4x4 vehicles to reach those in more rural areas. Meals on wheels services have continued as usual.

Medway Council’s gritting lorries have been working through the night to keep roads clear and it says all primary and secondary routes remain passable.

In addition to this, council teams have been out salting the main pathways in all town centres manually by hand since 6.30 this morning.

Salting routes and salt bin locations can be found on www.medway.gov.uk, as well as updates on weather forecasts, travel information and advice on coping with the bad weather.

Cllr Phil Filmer, Medway Council’s portfolio holder for front line services, said: "Our teams have been out salting all primary and secondary routes across the area throughout the night and will continue to minimise disruption to residents.

"As a result, all of our major routes have remained open and passable. Although, as always, advice to drivers is drive carefully, to plan their journeys and ensure their vehicles are in a good condition before they set off.

"I’d encourage residents to visit the council website, where they can find up to date travel and weather information as well as advice on the steps we are taking to help residents during the bad weather."
