Sheppey woman solves mystery of £1 million note found by Rochester litter picker

The background to a £1 million note found by a litter picker has been revealed.

As reported by KentOnline on Saturday, Beryl Payne found the curious currency while tidying up near her Rochester home.

After reading the story, Yvonne Kent got in touch to say the note is similar to one she received through her letterbox from a religious group.

So instead of pennies from heaven, 77-year-old Beryl may have to bank on Who Wants to be Millionaire if she is to reap a life-changing windfall.

Yvonne received a similar note from the Time for Truth! organisation at her home in Warden Bay, Sheppey, during lockdown.

She has not taken up an invitation to get in touch with them and is using it as a bookmark.

Beryl told how she picked up half of the note and retrieved the other half a few yards away near the railways bridge in the lower part of the High Street.

The pensioner, who is a lay person-in-charge at the Unitarian Church in Hamond Hill, Chatham, said: "I was going to get rid of it, but I might keep it as a souvenir. I'm going to look it up on websites. I might even frame it."

The litter pick was organised by the High Street shop Naked Products.

The grandmother-of-two said: "I knew it was impossible, there aren't £1m bank notes.

"You never know what you might find when you litter pick. Sadly, it was not 'legal tender', but it gave everyone a good laugh."

After showing it to shop owner nearby, she said: "I might be able to pay someone to pick up the litter."

The community volunteer was taking part in the clean-up with the New Road PACT group, which regularly looks after south of River ward.
