Port re-opens after being closed due to poor weather

Motorists travelling towards the A228 at Grain were advised to avoid the area yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon, after Thamesport was closed due to the bad weather.

The port on the Isle of Grain, used solely by container ships, closed at 8.45am, due to the strong winds and poor weather conditions.

Drivers were advised to not go to the area unless their journey was essential.

As a result of the closure, and the Thamesport site reaching its capacity to hold 100 HGV vehicles, the A228 between Main Road and the roundabout with the junction for Bells Lane was closed to allow lorries waiting to board container ships to park there to wait for it to reopen.

The lorries were being stacked along one lane of the A228 towards the port.

Traffic travelling away from the Isle of Grain was not effected.

The port re-opened at 5.30pm.

A spokesman for Medway Police said: “Police provided any necessary diversions for residents in the area who need to travel to or away from their homes.

“Thamesport was reopened later in the same evening.”
