After being made redundant last year, a keen artist who transformed his hobby into an unique business has created an impressive beach mural on fence panels.

Ron Williams of Walderslade tends to avoid the traditional paper canvas and instead turns his ability to back gardens.

The 66-year-old gained online attention last year after he transformed his fence with a painting of an African elephant which he hoped would lead to bigger things.

And it seems it has as Ron has since been commissioned to paint a beach mural for a woman suffering with seasonal affective disorder – a type of depression that comes and goes with a seasonal pattern.

The scene spans over seven fence panels and frames the majority of the woman's garden.

He said: "She wanted a beach scene to look at in the winter to brighten her day and lift her up a bit. She wanted something nice to look at in the winter ahead.

"We had a few discussions and I did a few mock-ups in watercolour. She then produced a "wish list" that included beach umbrellas, yacht with dolphins swimming alongside, palm trees, a light house, rocks, beaches, an ocean liner, birds and a whole lot more.

"It is something that grabs people's attention if they see it. She was absolutely pleased with it."

The scene cost a total of £900 and took Ron four weeks to complete as he had to "dodge the weather".

The Walderslade Road resident does also stick to the more traditional canvases of art producing watercolour prints which have become quite popular.

Before pursuing art, the retired motor trade worker was a service advisor at WJ King Dacia car dealers in Dartford but was put on furlough for six months until he was informed his position was now redundant.

He had worked in the industry for 46 years but said he is enjoying retirement and pursuing his art. He added: "I can afford to do it now. I have got time on my hands. It seems to be something in the family that we can do art.

"I lose myself in it. I just get engrossed in the painting. It is a wonderful feeling being creative."

Speaking last year, he said: "I cannot sit still and just want to do stuff all the time, so I looked at the fence and thought I would give it a go. I can turn my hand to most things."

He said he looks as almost anything as a "blank canvas" in which he can fill with colour and pictures and has even started venturing into cartoon designs after becoming a grandad.

The dad-of-two, who originates from Zimbabwe, has even been contacted to paint on people's outside walls which he will start when the weather allows.
