New look for Gillingham railway station

Work is expected to go on until the late summer to give a facelift to Gillingham railway station.
Rehman Chishti, MP for Gillingham and Rainham, dug the first spadeful of soil this morning, Monday, to start the £2.6 million task.
Network Rail is working with Medway Council to transform the station approach, build a new entrance on Railway Street and modernise the platform area.
Cllr Chishti said: “When it is finished this will give people the right impression of the town. It is important to make it vibrant, safe and accessible.
“First impressions are the lasting impressions.
“This will turn Gillingham station into a great station.”
The alterations will involve realigning the road over Victoria Bridge, widening the pavement and turning the station into a focal point at the end of Gillingham High Street.
