M2 and Blue Bell Hill traffic set to be hit by closure of Rochester Road next to Rochester Airport for CityFibre broadband work

A road next to an airport is set to close for six weeks while broadband cables are installed as part of a £40 million project.

Rochester Road in Rochester will close between Laker Road and the Bridgewood Roundabout from Monday, July 24 to Sunday, September 3.

The works by CityFibre work, which are to install a new network, will see the Rochester-bound carriageway closed and may affect motorists using the M2 or Blue Bell Hill.

Adrian Smith, CityFibre’s Partnership Manager for Medway, said: “We are investing £40m to deliver a full fibre network that will future-proof Medway’s digital infrastructure for decades to come.

“This is a major undertaking and we are working closely with our build partner and the local authority to complete these as efficiently as possible.

“As part of these essential works, we are required to enforce a closure on Bridgewater roundabout towards Rochester.

“The closure will affect traffic in one direction only from the roundabout and along Maidstone/Rochester Road, between July 24 – September 3.

“We would like to thank residents for their patience while we deliver this project."

It is part of CityFibre’s £40m project to roll out faster internet across Medway with its full fibre network.

Lower Rainham Road in Rainham is currently shut between Berengrave Lane and West Motney Way until Sunday (July 9) for CityFibre cable-laying works.

Residents have slammed the “nightmare” roadworks on the road often used by commuters and parents on the school run, who say it has turned their town “the world’s biggest car park”.

Works along the road and its adjoining streets Lower Bloors Lane and Pump Lane are scheduled from now until October.

Last week, the district’s three Conservative ward councillors called for an immediate review of the roadworks.

They said the congestion had caused children to arrive late for school, for businesses to be hit with missed appointments, and footfall reduced at the Rainham Shopping Centre.
