Robbery arrest by armed police in Chatham

A Medway man was arrested on suspicion of being involved in a robbery at a bookmakers in New Romney.

Armed officers, with other colleagues, executed a warrant at an address in Central Park Gardens, Chatham, on Sunday night to arrest the man.

Police including dog handlers went to the address late on Sunday night and arrested a 27-year-old.

The robbery happened at the Jeff Mabey bookies, in New Romney High Street, at around 10.30am, last Friday.

A robber armed with a sawn-off shotgun ordered shaking customers inside to lay face down on the floor before escaping with the takings.

A white man dressed in black clothes, wearing a dark baseball cap and a scarf halfway round his face, walked into the shop and started pointing the gun in their faces, shouting at them to hit the floor.

He is believed to be in his 20s.

A spokesman for Medway Police, said: “The arrest was in connection to an armed robbery at a bookmakers in New Romney on Friday, June 18.

The man has been released on bail until September 5, while enquiries continue.
