Rochester Bridge covered in smoke as fire burns below

This is the moment a passer-by captured footage of a fire raging beneath Rochester Bridge during a midnight blaze.

Matthew Redmond-Hall filmed the fire after calling 999 when he spotted smoke and flames while driving nearby at around 11.45pm yesterday.

The 25-year-old was driving towards Strood when he turned his car around to see what was going on.

He said: "The fire was well ablaze when I got there and I phone the fire brigade at 11.50pm.

"I drove past on the other side of the bridge heading from Rochester to Strood and wondered what was going on so I turned back around."

Matthew, who lives in Strood, had heard homeless people had been living below the bridge but was confident nobody was there at the time of the fire.

He said: There was all plywood and there were bangs from what were maybe gas canisters.

"I don't think there were any homeless people there at the time. The fire brigade turned up eight minutes after I called them and I stayed for five minutes before driving off.

"It was a big fire. The pictures do not do it justice."
