Two grass fires on Sunday

by Keyan Milanian

A shed was damaged in a suspicious fire in the early hours of today (Monday) in Chatham.

It is the latest in a series of deliberate blazes in the area.

Two weeks ago a fire seriously damaged a terraced house in Otway Street.

In the same week a derelict cobblers’ shop was burnt out in nearby Hilda Street.

A man was arrested and later released after the Otway Street fire.

Fire crews from Medway tackled the blaze with two pumps at 12.38am this morning in Hilda Street.

The shed and some of its contents were damaged.

Crews left the scene at 1.08am.

Firefighters were kept busy yesterday (Sunday) with two suspicious grass fires.

The first call came at 12.30pm with a report of a blaze at the Great Lines, Gillingham.

The second was on the White Road estate, in Chatham, at 4.45pm.

Crews spend 15 to 20 minutes dousing the flames at both the scenes.
