It's understood thousands of jobs at high street retailer Poundworld could be in doubt as the discount store has been put up for sale.
US-based owner TPG is said to be seeking bids by the end of the month - after ditching a rescue plan.
Poundworld has stores in Canterbury, Chatham, Strood, Dartford and Gravesend.
It has 355 stores nationally and employs 5,700 people.
It had announced a plan to restructure its debts using an insolvency process known as a company voluntary arrangement but this is now in doubt.
