A study into expanding Wainscott Primary School has been ordered by Medway Council’s cabinet.

The school, in Wainscott Road, Rochester, could take on more children in reception and establish a nursery if the move is given the go-ahead.

It is hoped the changes will be in place for the start of the school year in September 2013.

Senior councillors voted for a feasibilty study to be launched at a meeting yesterday.

The number of primary school aged children in the Towns is expected to increase from 20,800 in 2009 to 23,200 by 2015.

However, less than two-and-a-half years ago, the council proposed to close three schools due to a drop in birth rates.

The three put forward for closure were Ridge Meadow Primary and St John’s Infants, in Chatham, and Rochester’s St Peter’s Infants.

Ridge Meadow closed in July 2010 despite a hard-fought campaign by parents and staff.

Plans to address the lack of places in Chatham and Rochester are being considered an will be unveiled at a later date.
