He said: “The first two weeks we really loaded them up with a lot of long distance stuff and some hill work. Now it is like speed endurance work and a little bit sharper in training, The ball work will be sharper and tighter.

“We have put a lot of mileage in their legs to strengthen their thighs, hamstrings, ankles and everything else. That’s the first two weeks and it has been tough but they have been brilliant, very good.

“There is a meaning to our madness, we are not just flogging them for the sake of it. From now until the start of the season it will be all short, sharp stuff. If you have quick feet you have a quick mind and vice versa.”

Pennock was keen to see his men move the ball quickly against Dartford and hopes the change in training will help improve their touch.

He said: “If you have four of five touches then you do get closed down but the ball will never get tired, we will and hopefully the opposition will if we keep moving it with one or two or three touches, especially with nice flat pitches.

“The boys really enjoy knocking the ball around and being positive. It’s good to watch.”
