Gills boss Justin Edinburgh was pleased with the workout at Folkestone on Tuesday night.

Gillingham were in action for the first time since last season and fitness was the key priority for Edinburgh.

He said: “We went with an exercise-purpose in mind, in terms of 45 minutes for each player, which everyone completed.

“The attitude of the players was excellent and it was a worthwhile workout.”

The game also gave fans a first look at the club’s new signings, including strikers Rory Donnelly and Be Williamson.

“There were glimpses of quality at times,” said the Gills boss.

“We are working up towards the start of the season and this is where is starts.”

Young midfielder Emmanuel Osadebe was one of those who shined in the 3-0 win, with a bright first 45 minutes.

“I was pleased with him,” Edinburgh said.

“It’s a big step up for him and one I feel in time he will be capable of doing.”

Former Swansea man Donnelly, a free-transfer summer signing, opened the scoring.

Edinburgh said: “when you come to a new club there is a settling in period but that will be a good start for Rory, to get off the mark. It was a good finish as well.”

Youngsters Callum Emptage, Josh Hare and Michael Freiter were also involved.

“They have been given new contracts and have all earned their place,” said the Gills boss.

“There is a lot of work to be done with those players. We have seen they are capable and there is a lot more hard work to be done. Certainly there are prospects there in the making.”

On the injury front, Callum Davies missed out as the club are being cautious with him, following a long-term absence.

Jermaine McGlashan and Brennan Dickenson both went down injured at different times but both emerged without any lasting damage.

“(Callum) needs another week or two of training before we introduce him back in,” Edinburgh said.

“He will probably come to France with us and grab some minutes out there. We have a clean bill of health.”
