QPR goalkeeper Joe Lumley heads back to QPR after impressive performances on loan for Gillingham against Sunderland and Crewe

Goalkeeper Joe Lumley is heading back to parent club QPR with a glowing report from his brief time at Gillingham.

The 25-year-old - who was a one-time first choice at the Championship side - has played the last two at Gillingham as emergency cover for Jack Bonham.

Bonham had to sit out of action for a week after suffering concussion last week at Ipswich and with his return expected this weekend, Lumley’s stint at the Gills ends with a clean-sheet at Crewe.

Lumley impressed in both games, beaten twice against Sunderland but one of those was from the penalty spot and the other from a one-on-one. He produced some more top class saves to frustrate Crewe on Tuesday night.

Gillingham boss Steve Evans was grateful to have had Lumley but also glad to have Bonham back.

He said: “We’ve got Jack Bonham coming back haven’t we? He was our player of the year up to now and he was our player of the year for me last year as well, he has been outstanding.

“Joe has come in and done the job and he will now go back. I will speak to Mark Warbuton (QPR manager) probably on Wednesday (today).

“I think Joe has been excellent in both games, he deserved a clean sheet on Saturday (against Sunderland). He didn’t get it and we know why, he deserved a clean sheet on Tuesday by his performance and he got it but he had some good defenders in front of him when they got to grips with the game because that was s a very gifted young Crewe side.”
