Gillingham manager Neil Harris hoping for a Monday signing as strikers Mikael Mandron and Isaac Olaofe linked

Gillingham are being linked to several strikers as manager Neil Harris says the club are hoping to announce another new signing today (Monday).

The Gills remain light in forward areas and that was evident on Saturday at Dover as they were unable to make their opportunities count. Since the start of pre-season the Gills have been without a senior contracted striker to spearhead their attack.

In the last few days former striker Mikael Mandron has been linked with a move back to the club, two years after he left for Crewe. The Frenchman’s only season at Gills was cut short by the Covid pandemic.

Millwall academy graduate Isaac Olaofe is also rumoured to be on the radar of Gills boss Neil Harris. He hasn’t played a league game for the Lions but the 22-year-old has enjoyed success with Sutton United, helping them to promotion from the National League in 2020/21 with 14 goals and returning to them last season in League 2.

There was also reported interest in Dagenham’s striker Paul McCallum and links to former Millwall and Salford front-man Tom Elliott.

Speaking on Saturday, Harris said: “We are very close to one more to do on Monday and after that I expect a little more business as well, so if we can get close to having the final numbers by next weekend then I might just need a couple of loans after that.”

Expanding on his possible Monday-morning business, Harris said: “I was told just before kick-off (at Dover) that we were very close, but that will be dependent on contracts and medical. I don’t say much unless I am quite confident so I won't mention players, but certainly very confident of Monday morning.”

Gillingham have played two pre-season games, with youth striker Joe Gbode and trialist Lewis Walker operating as the main striker, a position that has been left vacant since the departure of Vadaine Oliver, who on Sunday sealed a move to Bradford City.
