A trio of student scientists from Maidstone will provide the fizz at the Bright Spark Awards contest next month.

And the competition is still open to groups of youngsters from primary or secondary school using cross-curricular skills in maths, IT, science, and engineering – until the deadline of Friday, June 15.

Chaaya Vadwana, Madison Kirkhamtampin, and Nasheetha Badrudeen from Invicta Grammar School won a place in the final with an effervescent project.

Chaaya said: “We’ve been trying to create the perfect bath bomb recipe and it’s a recipe that floats and that’s aesthetically pleasing.

“We’ve all used bath bombs before and we wanted to see the science behind it.”

The group will compete against teams from across the county at a Dragons’ Den-style final staged at Discovery Park in Sandwich.

Shortlisted teams will be filmed in school in advance to explain the detail of their project. Each video will be shown at the final before students take to the stage to present their work.

There will be a number of experience prizes for standout projects so every finalist will have the chance to win something even if they don’t take the top spot.

The panel of judges will include representatives from Megger, Global Associates, Pfizer, Discovery Park, Benenden Hospital Trust, BAE Systems, Astro Communications, and Golding Vision (part of Golding Homes).
