Bearsted Library to remain 'stationary'

Bearsted Library is to remain where it is – for now.

From 1975, the service was located in the former schoolmaster's house facing Bearsted Green, but it moved out in 2017 when it was discovered the building – which dates from1895 – had dry rot and was unsafe.

A new home was found in the old stationmaster's house – part of the Bearsted Station buildings in Ware Street.

Initially, KCC applied only for a temporary change of use permission to last for five years.

Those five years are about to expire and bosses are seeking to renew the "temporary" permission for another five years.

It argues the station location has served the village well.

It said: "The site at Bearsted Station has proved to be very successful with the community over the past five years; it's a location close to the old site and other community facilities."

"There is adequate parking – both on-street parking nearby – and the station’s own paid parking bays.

"The site is within the centre of the community and well served by footpaths and public transport."

However, KCC has declined to pursue a permanent change of use permission for the building.

It said: "The library service is currently under review, and it is therefore deemed appropriate that the existing change of use should be extended only on a temporary basis while a decision is made as to whether a permanent replacement facility will be provided."

Meanwhile, after standing derelict for five years, the library's former home has been sold off for more than £700,000 and is currently undergoing renovation to form a private house.
