Overnight closures at M20's J4

A SERIES of overnight motorway closures on the M20 junction 4 at Leybourne, near West Malling, are taking place for work to continue on the construction of a new bridge.

The closures will take place on:

* Saturday October 14: Main deck concrete pour (backup Monday October 16)

* Saturday October 21 : Concrete joint between decks (backup Monday October 23)

* Saturday October 28: Install Parapet Rail and Removal of under deck support and access system

* Saturday November 4: For overall contingency purposes

On each night, traffic levels permitting, the motorway will be closed at 9pm. The motorway will re-open by 7am on Sunday mornings, and by 5am on weekday mornings. The motorway will be opened sooner if the works are completed earlier.

During closures, traffic will be diverted past the junction using the existing slip roads. Signing will direct motorists safely through the junction.

Highways Agency project sponsor Dave Keen said: "Similar M20 closures were successfully used earlier this year, with minimal delay to road users.

"Drivers heading for local destinations could avoid delays by not using Junction 4 during closures. Completion of the junction improvement is expected in late November."

Safe driving at roadworks

During 2005, five workers were killed and 12 seriously injured in the course of their work on Highways Agency roads. This was the worst year since 1999.

For the safety of all road users and road workers, drivers approaching roadworks are advised to:

* Keep within the speed limit - it is there for your safety.

* Get into the correct lane in good time - don't keep switching.

* Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks.

* Be alert for works' traffic leaving or entering roadworks.

* Keep a safe distance - there could be queues in front.

* Observe all signs - they are there to help you.
