Thamesport has now reopened and earlier traffic problems on the A228 are clearing.

Drivers travelling on or towards the A228 at Grain were advised to avoid the area because of traffic problems caused by the closure.

Thamesport, a port used solely by container ships, closed this morning at 11am, due to bad weather.

The A228 at the roundabout at Christmas Lane was shut cauysing a small number of lorries waiting to board container ships stack along one lane of the A228 towards the port.

Traffic coming away from the Isle of Grain was not affected.

Police put in place diversions for residents in the area who needed to travel to or away from their homes.

The container ship port was reopened around 3.45pm allowing the small backlog of traffic to be be cleared.

Weather warning

With stormy weather and severe gales developing across the county – particularly in coastal areas – Kent police are warning people to take extra care.

Their advice follows a UK Met Office severe weather warning for London and the South East.

Advice from Kent Police to motorists is:

• Check the weather forecast and road conditions before you travel;

• Poor weather conditions mean it can be harder for drivers to see pedestrians and cyclists so be vigilant and make sure you can be seen however you are travelling - this includes using lights or wearing high visibility clothing;

• In poor visibility be extra alert for hazards;

• Slow down and be aware of side winds. Particular care should be taken if you are towing or if you are driving a high sided vehicle;

• When the roads are wet, it can take twice as long to stop your vehicle - another good reason to keep your speed down;

• Take care when driving on exposed routes such as bridges, or high open roads - delay your journey if possible;

• Make sure you have plenty fuel and basic provisions, such as waterproof clothing and something to drink, before you set out on a journey.
