Mary says: “It was a lovely, family occasion and a fantastic day for us all. Over the past three years we have helped and supported each other along the way.”

Stephen adds: “I started my journey in higher education with my mum. She took me along to an open day at Greenwich and encouraged me to enter the field of mental health nursing, so it was fitting that we graduated together.

Mary is now working full-time, providing end-of-life and palliative care for people with learning disabilities, while Stephen has undertaken a mental health nursing role at Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust.

He plans to study further at Greenwich and is starting a PhD in Health & Social Care.

Stephen’s ideas for a ‘Mental Health Champions’ scheme, to promote further awareness of mental health care in acute general hospitals, have been considered by senior figures within the Department of Health.

He is an active member of the national steering group for improving the physical health of people with mental health problems.
