Sevenoaks MP Michael Fallon tipped for knighthood in David Cameron's leaked resignation honours list

Sevenoaks MP Michael Fallon has been tipped for a knighthood in David Cameron's leaked resignation honours list.

The name of the 64-year-old Secretary of State for Defence was among 47 others obtained by The Sunday Times.

The list contains many of Mr Cameron's closest supporters during the EU referendum campaign, including three other members of Theresa May's cabinet.

They are Philip Hammond, MP for Runnymede and Weybridge, Patrick McLoughlin, MP for Derbyshire Dales and David Lidington, Aylesbury MP and Leader of the House of Commons.

It is not unusual for honours lists to be drawn up by outgoing prime ministers on stepping down from office, but Sir John Major was the last to do so in 1997.

The list also raised eyebrows after emerged it reportedly contained the names of 24 Downing Street staff - including Isabel Spearman, special adviser to Samantha Cameron and according to some national newspapers, her stylist.

Today, a spokesman for Downing Street said Mrs May would not intervene, but all those recommended for an honour would go through "all the proper processes and committees" before they could be awarded.

This means the names will go through Parliamentary and Political Service Committee chaired by Lord Spicer before Mrs May makes a final decision.
