Mike Conway endured a frustrating penultimate round of the GP2 series at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium.

Conway finished eighth in the opening race which would have put him on pole for race two, due to the partial-reverse grid order format, but the demotion of second place man Bruno Senna to 11th left the Sevenoaks man in seventh and a position further back on the grid.

That opening race had already tested Conway’s resolve after a problem in the pits.

Conway came in running sixth but a stuck wheel nut cost him valuable seconds and he returned to the track in 11th. He eventually fought back to eighth on a wet track.

Conway said: “We decided to pit at the right time but a problem made us lose valuable time. When I went back out I found the first laps difficult due to the damp track and the slick tyres. It was easy to make a mistake.”

Race two didn’t last long for Conway.

“My race started in a bad way when a mistake at take-off cost me several positions,” he said.

“Then, at lap 6, I ended up spinning while exiting the last chicane. Everything ended up there.

“It’s a pity because we had a clear possibility to score an important result."

Conway sits 11th in the series. The last round of the championship takes place in Italy this weekend.
