A man is critically ill in hospital after a serious crash on the A249 near the Sheppey Crossing last night

A man has been left in a critical condition following a serious crash on the A249 last night.

Police are appealing for witnesses following the accident near Iwade at around 10.20pm.

A black Chevrolet Lacetti and a green Volkswagon Bora were in collision with a pedestrian in the Londonbound carriageway of the A249 at the slip road for the B2005.

The man, who is in his 20s, was taken to a London hospital, where he is critically ill.

Passing motorists said four ambulances and five police cars attended the incident.

One woman said a person was lying in the road being treated by paramedics as she drove on the opposite carriageway in "foggy" conditions.

Another witness, who saw the emergency services' "flashing blue lights" said the accident "looks pretty bad".

The Sheppey Crossing and the A249 southbound carriageway between Queenborough and Iwade remained closed until 4.20am.
