The Sheppey Crossing has now reopened after it was closed for several hours to allow forensics officers to investigate a double tragedy.

Mum Deborah Roberts, and her eight-year-old son Marshall were killed in a crash involving their car and a van on Tuesday, July 1.

Four months on, teams from Kent Police's serious collision investigation unit closed the bridge while they carried out investigations today.

It was shut at 10am this morning, and reopened to traffic just before 2.30pm.

Deborah, of Granville Road, Sheerness, was on her way to Medway Maritime Hospital when the crash happened.

The 42-year-old and Marshall died at the scene. Her younger son Archer survived.

The male driver of the pick-up was arrested the same day on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He has been released on bail until January 16 while the investigation continues.

Speaking earlier today, a police spokesman said: "The Serious Collision Investigation Unit at Kent Police will be carrying out forensic enquiries on the Sheppey Crossing from around 10am on 4 November.

"These enquiries are in connection with a collision on the crossing on 1 July 2014.

"As a result, both carriageways of the Sheppey Crossing will be closed for a short time to allow officers to carry out their duties."
