Tributes to family butcher Richard Jones who worked on the Isle of Sheppey all his life

The funeral has taken place of retired master butcher Richard Jones who died at his Minster home after a prolonged illness. He was aged 90.

Richard, also known as Dick, had been in the butchery trade all his life, working in the
family business R P Jones which traded from the shop in Alma Street, Sheerness from 1937 until 1988.

In the early days there was an abattoir in the alley behind the shop and three generations of loyal customers were always assured of fresh quality meat and poultry.

Richard was a familiar figure in his straw hat and striped apron, ever cheerful, working long hours, switching to his flat cap and overcoat when making deliveries on his bike.

He returned to the business after completing National Service with the Army Catering Corps stationed in Cheshire and Yorkshire.

He and late wife Margaret were married at the Royal Dockyard Church, Sheerness, in 1961. She too had worked in the trade on the admin side for butcher W F Goodhew.

Since her death 11 years ago he had been cared for at home in Worcester Close by youngest daughter Rebecca.

He was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2010, but although he beat the disease his health failed and he suffered the early onset of dementia.

Essentially a family man, his interests centred around genealogy and Island history.

He is survived by stepdaughter Jean Jordan, who lives in France, and daughters Helen and Rebecca. Eldest daughter Elisabeth died in 2016.

He was a much-loved grandfather to Andre and Simon, Isaac and Callum, and Ethan, and great grandchildren Cortney and Kristie. He also leaves sisters Beryl, Delys Enid and Mary. Younger brother Barry died in 2008.

Mr Jones died last month and his funeral was held at The Garden of England Crematorium, Bobbing last week, conducted by the Rev Elizabeth Johnstone.
