Bob Geldof is supporting a Sheppey school’s project to help children in South Africa.

The former Boomtown Rats’ frontman has sent a letter to the Isle of Sheppey Academy pupils praising them for their SHOUT (Sheppey Outreach) campaign.

Youngsters are raising funds and collecting clothes and toys for children at the Nkweneza Primary School, which is near the city of East London in the country’s Eastern Cape.

After hearing about the school’s efforts, Faversham resident Bob sent a letter of support and encouraged others to make a donation to help the children.

His letter reads: “Dear parents, pupils and supporters. It is important that we do not lose sight of the fact that as a developed wealthy nation, we have a moral obligation to provide aid and assistance to those in a less fortunate position than ourselves.

“That young people can formulate a plan and then follow it through to completion is impressive.

“I congratulate the students and staff at the Isle of Sheppey Academy for their fundraising efforts and applaud them for the principles of the Shout project in general.

“It is easy to forget that this is being done for the pupils of the Nkweneza Primary School who have so little.

“Others should take note of these efforts, not turn a blind eye, but make a donation, now.

“Bob Geldof.”

Shout spokesman, 16-year-old Hannah Walker, said: “The letter confirms that our efforts will have a positive effect and that our project has been worthwhile.”

Mick Thomas, who is co-ordinating Shout, said: “We believe that Bob’s endorsement of the project will encourage local businesses to make a charitable contribution.

“We can guarantee that 100 per cent of the contributions received will be used to help the children we are supporting.”

If you would like to make a donation to the project, you can contact the Shout team at the academy on 01795 662474 or emailing them on sheppeyoutreach@yahoo.com
