RNLI Sheerness called to boat crash on River Medway near Strood and come across suspected armed sailor

A rescue team called out to a crash between two boats faced a suspected armed sailor on arrival.

RNLI in Sheerness were dispatched earlier this morning to reports of a two vessel crash on the River Medway near Strood.

An Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) was launched shortly after midnight and while on route the coastguard informed them the tug boat involved in the incident had a single adult onboard, believed to be armed.

Rescuers contacted police and made their way to Sun Pier at Chatham, the tug arrived shortly afterwards.

Police spoke to the person onboard the tug, but it is not yet known if they were arrested.

The ILB checked over the other vessel involved before returning to station.
