A man has been arrested after another man was stabbed in an attack in Sheerness.

Emergency services were sent to the scene about half a mile from the town centre, at 3.30am today.

The man was taken to King's College Hospital in London where his injuries were described as life-threatening. He is now in a "serious but stable" condition.

A 20-year-old man from Sheerness has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and remains in custody.

Officers from Kent Police's major crime unit want to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything at the time of the alleged assault, or an earlier disturbance involving four men at the exit of Sheerness Holiday Park in Halfway Road.

It is understood the incident happened on or before a bridge linking the High Street with Halfway Road.

Officers remain at the scene and the High Street is closed between Maple Street and Halfway Road.

Motorists attempting to drive past the scene are being turned around by police officers.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said: "I was woken by screaming. Then I heard a man's voice saying 'get him out of the road!'

"Another bloke then said 'I've got blood all over my hands'."

A police spokesman said the victim's injuries were consistent with a stab wound.

Andy Johnstone, general manager of the nearby Sheerness Holiday Park, says as far as he is aware non of his visitors have been involved. No police officers have visited the site.

People have spoken of their shock on the KentOnline and Sheerness Times Guardian Facebook pages.

Kerri-Louise Gordon said: "I hope the man pulls through, what horrible news."

Anne Wagger added: "I hope they catch who did it. Sheerness is getting worse, you've got to have eyes everywhere."

Forensics officers were also called.
