It might have been the lousy weather that put people off - but Sheppey failed in its attempt to beat a world record.

Organisers had hoped more than 6,000 people would head to Leysdown on Sunday to record a new record of the largest gathering of pirates in one place - but in the end there were 804 people in costume.

The attempt was organised by the Leysdown-on-Sea Carnival Committee and the Sheppey Pirates and it took place at Little Groves Beach Field.

After the count, there was a firework display for the guests.

Chairman of the committee Paul Day said they were disappointed with the attempt and he put it down to the weather although he estimates there were about 1,500 people overall who came along.

He said: "There was a massive downpour and before they could get to cover most people were soaked and went home.

"I would like to thank everyone who came along.

"We would like to try again next year."

Mr Day also thanked the Sheppey Event Marshalling Unit for overseeing the event and Sheppey Caravans, Mr Bs and Cairns arcades for sponsoring the fireworks.
